Iván Fischer’s superb Mahler series with the Budapest Festival Orchestra reaches its conclusion this week with the enigmatic Symphony No. 7, whilst Robin Ticciati’s first recording of a Bruckner symphony (with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin) is released on Linn. There’s also Schubert from both Khatia Buniatishvili and the Copenhagen Phil, Chausson’s great Poème de l'amour et de la mer from Véronique Gens and the Orchestre National de Lille, and the world premiere of Fazil Say’s epic Troy Sonata, performed by the composer.
Since the Hungarian conductor revealed to Limelight Magazine a couple of years ago that he ‘will never conduct [the Eighth Symphony] because I feel I have no key to it’, this release is the final instalment in a Mahler cycle which has been described as ‘essential for further enlightenment’ (BBC Music Magazine), ‘provocative, iconoclastic, and highly recommended’ (The Guardian), and ‘gripping and very special’ (The Observer).

Ticciati’s only previous Bruckner recording (the Mass No. 3 with the Bamberger Symphoniker, back in 2014) prompted Gramophone to observe that his ‘feel for Bruckner’s intricate structures...runneth over with instinctive wisdom’; for his third recording with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, he tackles a symphony which he describes as ‘wild, daring and risky’.

Foster and his Danish orchestra present the three symphonies which Schubert composed before his nineteenth birthday alongside the Rossini-inspired Overture in the Italian Style from 1817 and the incidental music for Helmina von Chézy’s play Rosamunde, Fürstin von Zypern, which premiered at the Theater an der Wien in 1823.

The veteran Soviet-Austrian pianist (who’s currently in the studio recording the complete Schumann sonatas for release this autumn, and enjoyed a warm relationship with Shostakovich) joins her regular collaborators the Artemis Quartet for his 1941 Quintet, a work which she first recorded with the Borodin Quartet back in 2001.

The Georgian pianist's first Schubert album opens with the composer's great final Piano Sonata, followed by the Four Impromptus D899 and Liszt's transcription of 'Leise flehen meine Lieder' from Schwanengesang. She will tour Europe, the US and Hong Kong with this programme throughout April and May.

This album of solo piano works by the Turkish composer and pianist centres on the Troy Sonata, premiered last August in Çanakkale (the nearest major settlement to the site of the ancient city) as part of the 55th International Troia Festival – its ten movements include depictions of Helen, Achilles, and of course the Trojan Horse itself. Also includes Art of Piano and Yürüyen Köşk (The Moving Mansion).

The prize-winning young cellist (whose accolades include successes at the International Manhattan Music Competition and the Prix Jeune Soliste des Médias Francophones Publics) pairs Haydn’s two concertos with Vivaldi’s double concerto for violin and cello RV547 in period-instrument performances with the Eurasian Soloists Chamber Orchestra, formed in 2015 and making their debut commercial recording here.

Chausson featured prominently on the French falcon’s award-winning recital Néère (also on Alpha) in 2015, which left Gramophone ‘open-mouthed with its beauty’; now she tackles the composer’s great ‘song of love and the sea’, coupled here with the composer’s only symphony, premiered a couple of years before the song-cycle and dedicated to the French artist Henry Lerolle.

Sir John Barbirolli conducts Elgar, Moeran, Delius and Vaughan Williams

This collection of recordings from the Barbirolli Society archives includes a 1958 broadcast of Elgar’s Sea Pictures from the Royal Albert Hall, a live recording of EJ Moeran’s Serenade (with the usually-omitted Intermezzo restored) from the 1952 Cheltenham Festival, a 1963 performance of Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis from Bergen, and Delius’s A Song of Summer.

Prepared in association with the Tchaikovsky Society in Tübingen, this is the first-ever absolutely complete collection of a neglected corner of Tchaikovsky’s output and includes two hours of premiere international recordings, such as the composer’s own transcription of his 1812 Overture and Festival Coronation March, and his earliest surviving work, the Anastasie-Valse, written during a family holiday in 1854.
