British soprano Sally Matthews was born in Southampton in 1975 and trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal Opera House’s Jette Parker Young Artist Programme, making her debut at Covent Garden as Nannetta in 2001. Early career successes included the 1999 Kathleen Ferrier Award and a place on BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists scheme. She is particularly associated with Mozart, Janáček, Strauss and Britten, with key roles including the Countess in Capriccio, the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier, Jenůfa, Ellen Orford, and the Governess in The Turn of the Screw.
